Liquid chromatography coupled online to a tandem mass spectrometer (LC-MS/MS) is a analytical technique used to determine the identity or structure of constituent molecules from within a complex heterogeneous sample.
Liquid chromatography allows for the separation and concentration of analytes (peptides) prior to analysis by a mass spectrometer. This has two clear benefits when compared to an-alysis by mass spectrometry without prior separation. Firstly it allows the mass spectrometer sufficient time to characterise the structure of individual analytes and secondly it allows for a better sensitivity of detection for individual analytes. In the following sections we will look at each these techniques in detail.
